Investing in the Next Generation

“The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).

GREAT LEADERS WILL ALWAYS BE INVESTING in the next generation of leaders. To leave a legacy, you must give your life away; you must invest and pour your life into others! A great leader will be developing his or her replacement, because their focus is on fulfilling a vision, not maintaining power or position.

We need to be intentional about this endeavor. The goal of our lives should be to follow Christ, serve others, and develop others who will expand the Kingdom. Who are the individual(s) you are developing as future leaders in your sphere(s) of influence? Isaiah 60:22 suggests the value of one man investing in another: “The least of you shall become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation” (NIV). Wow! What an impact.

Multiply the future generations by helping them with a growth plan and committing to a relational process.

Leaders help others reach a higher level of fruitfulness through trust, participation, and coaching. Leaders are committed to the growth of the individual through hands-on mentoring and training.

Developing leaders is not about teaching facts and verses. It is spiritual reproduction—multiplying the life of Christ in others around the world. Leadership development is a leader’s highest priority and the greatest means to multiply their work. This development focuses on building depth and breadth in the leader as they fulfill their calling.

“The importance of disciple-making is connected to having a world vision. This vision was the vision of our Lord Jesus Himself. He saw the whole world through His 12 disciples that He had trained in a most special way by imparting of His own life. Disciple-making ‘is the mandate of the Master’ (Mt 28:19-20). In our ministry and church world, we have many Christians, but few are disciples. If we have Christians who are not mature disciples (learners who are following and applying Christ to their whole life), we will never reach the whole world and fulfill the Lord’s vision if we continue to be mere Christians and not true disciples.” — Walt Henrichsen, Disciples Are Made not Born

The devotion above was taken from the 52-week Devotional entitled “Experiencing Christ as Life and Leader”.

Many give a mental assent to this teaching yet are often asking, “What do I do? What does Christ as life look like?“ Too often Christians err by moving too far to one side or the other—reducing the Christian life to a list of do’s and don’ts, or they actually do nothing.

These inspiring weekly devotions are just some of the actions that reflect the life of Christ in each of us, and they explore four areas as we follow the One Leader, Jesus Christ –

  • A Foundational Focus
  • A Personal Focus
  • A Relational Focus
  • A Missional Focus

Be challenged, encouraged, and spurred on to a deeper walk with Christ.
