Sharing Christ with Those in Need

“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15).

CHRIST HAD A PASSION and a compassion to reach the lost. Paul indicated in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 that he became all things to all men so he might save some. His heart and conviction were not just to preach the gospel or share Christ with the lost, but rather to live among the lost and to be there for them. His focus was to develop meaningful relationships with them in such a way that questions would arise.

Evangelism is a process like farming (cultivating, sowing, harvesting); it is not just an event. This process takes time, and the cultivation portion takes the most time. We are to cultivate a relationship, sow God’s Word, and help them clearly understand the issues. Evangelism is usually not one big decision but a series of mini-decisions; thus, overcoming barriers is also important. Events serve the process.

At the heart of lifestyle evangelism are relationships. Activities like finding common ground, becoming friends with the lost, and understanding the differences of audiences are all parts of the process. More than 80% of people hear of Christ through a relationship with another person. Prayer is the supernatural component that unleashes Christ’s work, and this is especially evident in sharing Christ with others.

Prayer also readies us to be present when needs arise. Much prayer is needed because evangelism is a spiritual battle.

We must pursue the lost with clear intentionality. And we need to “think lost” in actions and words.

“One thing I have observed in all my years of ministry is that the most effective and important aspects of evangelism usually take place on an individual, personal level. Most people do not come to Christ as an immediate response to a sermon they hear in a crowded setting. They come to Christ because of the influence of an individual.” — John MacArthur

The devotion above was taken from the 52-week Devotional entitled “Experiencing Christ as Life and Leader”.

Many give a mental assent to this teaching yet are often asking, “What do I do? What does Christ as life look like?“ Too often Christians err by moving too far to one side or the other—reducing the Christian life to a list of do’s and don’ts, or they actually do nothing.

These inspiring weekly devotions are just some of the actions that reflect the life of Christ in each of us, and they explore four areas as we follow the One Leader, Jesus Christ –

  • A Foundational Focus
  • A Personal Focus
  • A Relational Focus
  • A Missional Focus

Be challenged, encouraged, and spurred on to a deeper walk with Christ.
